Dr. James “Buddy” Powell has spent more than four decades in the field, working toward the conservation of marine mammals. He will share some of his field experiences and a brief history of manatee research and conservation in Florida and beyond.

ManateeDr. Powell has worked to conserve threatened and endangered species around the world and his efforts have resulted in coastal protected areas in Florida, West Africa, Central America, and Cuba. As the Executive Director of Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute, he manages a marine research program which provides technical advice, conservation initiatives, and scientific information to improve protection of marine species and habitats in the United States and internationally.

The evening starts with a covered dish supper at 6 p.m. The Sierra Club is providing a chicken main dish so please bring a salad, an appetizer, a vegetable dish or a dessert. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m., with short introductions by the three groups, followed by a Keynote Talk by Dr. Buddy Powell.

The Little Red Wagon Native Plant Nursery and the Tampa Garden Club have installed a butterfly garden on the grounds for our members to enjoy. Each group will also have conservation booths and items for purchase, so come prepared to learn about their activities and to shop!
